Our Founders & Patrons

Prof. Femi Williams

Founder and Initiator of The African Cancer Center
Born on October 3, 1935 in Lagos, Professor Akinwole Olufemi Williams, the founder of African Cancer Center (ACC), was educated at the CMS Grammar School and King’s College, Lagos before proceeding to study medicine at the Trinity College, Dublin (TCD). At TCD he earned his postgraduate degree of MD in pathology and taught there before returning to Nigeria to continue teaching at the University of Ibadan. He was appointed to the university’s College of Medicine’s chair of pathology in 1969.

His special interest was in Pathology, Radiotherapy and the treatment of liver diseases bordering on cancer. Prof. A.O. Williams was appointed the first provost of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, and he went further by Federal Government appointment to establish the teaching hospital at Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.

Thereafter, he obtained international appointments, the first of which was as Executive Secretary of the Technical Committee of the African Union (then known as Organization of African Unity). Next, among several others, was the prestigious appointment, in 1990, to the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Scholar-in-Residence, thus becoming the first African to hold that position. In between, Prof. Williams worked with the World Health Organization in Geneva on cancer-related medical researches. While at NCI the late founder of ACC published a very useful monograph, AIDS – An African Perspective (1992)

On retiring from the US National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, in 2004, he pursued his lifetime ambition to mitigate the scourge of cancer in Africa when he began the ACC project on October 26, 2006. Characteristic of him, he worked tirelessly to see the fruition of the project but, regretfully, death snatched him away on July 16, 2017 – only a day after he returned from the US on a working tour about the ACC project.

Founding Patrons

Akintola Williams, FCA, CFR, CBE

Mr Akintola Williams probably needs no introduction as his outstanding reputation has put him in bright limelight in Nigeria and worldwide. He died on September 11, 2023 at the age of 104 years. Though no longer alive, he was such an important builder of institutions that this brochure of the African Cancer Center (ACC) cannot be complete, or even meaningful, without showcasing him.

Mr Akintola Williams was the founding Chairman and first Patron of ACC.

When the Founder and Director of the African Cancer Center (ACC), the late Professor Olufemi Williams, who envisioned the establishment of the Center as a world-class 350-bed hospital for cancer treatment, research and training, approached Mr Akintola Williams in 2004 for fatherly advice and assistance in the actualization of the project, he met a listening ear and reception beyond his expectation. It was a testimony to his humanity that touched by the parlous state of cancer management in Nigeria and the growing number of deaths arising from the disease, Mr Akintola Williams offered to give his unflinching support to the Center despite his age and crowded schedule.

In the event, he accepted to be the foundation Chairman of the Center, incorporated as a private company, limited by guarantee. In addition, his indefatigable wife, the late Mrs Oye Williams, agreed to serve on the Board of the Center. Both of them gave their best efforts to ensure that tremendous progress was made at the early stages of the Center. Mr Williams provided an office space on the second floor of his personal office building in Ikoyi for the Center in addition to free secretarial services and entertainment during Board meetings. All these facilities are still available free of charge to the Center until this moment.

Under his leadership the Center undertook various fund-raising activities to finance its development. It was a testament to his generosity and commitment that he gave the highest donation during the fundraising event for the Center which took place at the MUSON Centre on 8th February, 2012.

Chris Ogunbanjo, LLB, CON

An outstanding Nigerian lawyer since 1949 up until 2023 when he, like his bosom friend and fellow patron of ACC, Mr Akintola Williams, passed on. With their demises in September and October 2023, ACC lost two great benefactors.

However, the pro bono legal services which Chief Chris Ogunbanjo began to offer ACC during his lifetime on the Board continues till this day. His children who are now holding the fort Chris Ogunbanjo LP have generously agreed to this continuity.
